Child's Bedroom - Before
This room did not have designated areas for toys, laundry and clothes storage.  Therefore when the child tried to 'clean up his room' things would get shoved under the bed and into any drawer, just to look picked up.  This method caused chaos every time he played or got dressed because he'd have to dig things out to see what his options were.

Child's Bedroom - After
To set this room up for easy access to toys and clothes we stored toys in clear labeled containers in the area he would play.  We also rearranged the furniture to create 'zones' for clothes, play and rest.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Even if a child is too young to read he/she can know where to put things by using picture labels to identify what goes where.  You might try playing a particular song to measure the amount of time your child will spend on the task.  This will help signal when to begin and when to stop.

Also, we recommend not using the phrase, 'go clean up your room'.  It's too large of a task.  A more successful option is to ask for small areas to be straigtened.  You can suggest, 'please go straighten your cars / dolls'.  It's a small task that anyone from age 3 should be able to accomplish and feel good about completing.

You can also play a certain song to identify the length of time they will spend doing the task.

And remember.....a reward is vital to success (whatever feeds your child's love language is the best choice, be it words of praise, small gifts like coins, special time with you).  We need to communicate positively that their efforts are appreciated in order to reinforce possitive responses when you ask for the task to be repeated.
